Sketches feel like the soul of a painting. They’re usually defined as quick, rough, and unfinished studies of composition and color as practice for larger work. But I’ve been working on these as ends in themselves and embracing them as standalone symbols of a daily creative practice. Many of these sketches were done as demos during my Sky & Clouds & Land & Air Online workshop between May and December 2020
They’re all inventions, not copied photographs or plein air paintings. They’re essentially an adaptation of the musical practice of variations on a theme and working on many simultaneously (as pictured below) feels like I’m following a melody as it moves through varied arrangements. They’ve redefined my studio practice by helping to conjure a creative flow without pressure or weight.
