Sketches are usually defined as quick, rough, and unfinished studies of composition and color as practice for larger work. But I’ve been working on these as ends in themselves and embracing them as standalone symbols of a daily creative practice.
I consider them poems—not novels, melodies—not full songs.
They’re all inventions, not copied photographs or plein air paintings. They’re essentially an adaptation of the musical practice of variations on a theme and working on many simultaneously feels like I’m following a melody as it moves through varied arrangements. They’ve redefined my studio practice by helping to conjure a creative flow without pressure or weight and have become the basis of my SCLA workshops.
*NOTE: These sketches are mostly small scale works on paper that are painted with big shapes and broad ideas in mind rather than detail and intricate nuance. They are all scanned at 1200 dpi so the digital image you’re looking at on screen is super hi-definition and much closer than you’d ever stand looking at this or any piece of art. I’d suggest standing a few feet away from your screen to get a more accurate feel for what it might look like hanging in your space.
